I'm constantly putting myself into situations where i have no idea what I am doing or how I got here, but at the same time am completely thankful I am where I am. Life isn't about sitting on a couch all day watching reruns. Life is about getting out and experiencing things and finding who we truly are. Here are thirty reasons why I feel our twenties matter.
1. Explore the outdoors. I cannot stress this enough. Take time to go on a jog in the woods, or a hike on a nice day. Cue up a great playlist, or go without music. Take time to actually look at the nature around you and how marvelous it can be.
2. Move somewhere new. Challenge yourself to living in a place that is different than what you are used to. Change is good. Chance is powerful.
3. Buy a yoga mat and wake up in the morning and dedicate even just a few minutes of your day to downward facing dogs, child's pose and meditation. You'll be surprised by how great the rest of your day will be if you just start it off this way!
4. Live out your dreams. Lord knows I am each and every day. I wake up and stare literally at the Empire State Building. Dreams becoming a reality doesn't get any closer than this.
5. Do something you love at least once a day. Whether that be writing, listening to music, talking to family or friends. No matter how busy your day is, you can always make time for something for you.
6. Date people who you would not normally see yourself dating. Even if it doesn't work out, you will learn at least one thing new about yourself that you had no idea about previously. Whether it is how much you hate or love something, it will help shape who you are becoming.
7. Make time to give back in some way. Whether it is donating, volunteering, anything that benefits someone else's life. One of the first things I looked into when moving to the city was just this. Find something you enjoy that can also help others in a positive way!
8. Don't let bad weather stop you from spending time with others. Those end up being the times that you are most thankful for!
9. Make time to see family members as often as you can. A big motivator for me to move north was to be closer to all of my relatives. It makes my heart so incredibly happy to be only a train away from spending time with all of my cousins, aunts, uncles and grandparents! These moments are the ones that I will remember forever.
10. Don't worry about spending money. If something will interest you and make you better in some way, or an experience you normally wouldn't get, do it. Concert tickets to T'Swift? Buy 'em. Trip with friends to a new city? Go. Worrying about money never got anyone anywhere.
11. Don't be afraid to do something alone. Go to a coffee shop, walk around outside, even to the movies alone. If you want to go, go. Simple as that.
12. Spend money on expensive makeup. Your skin will thank you. Also, wear sunscreen. Your older self will thank you.
13. Cut your hair, dye your hair, do whatever to your hair. Show your personality and don't let others bring you down. You do you, my friend.
14. Can't sleep? Take it as a sign to get your day started early. You'll be surprised by all the time you will have for activities.
15. Go to breakfast at 8am with a good friend on a random Saturday morning. You'll beat the rush, celebrate good company, and enjoy the best meal ever. I mean come on, what could be better than bacon.
16. Sign up for workout classes that you would NEVER in a million years expect to do. Cycling? Um.. yeah ok. But really, CYCLING rules (depending where). Who knew dancing on a bike could be so fun?
17. Namaste your way through vinyasa, bikram, and whatever-else-you-can-call yoga. Not only will you improve your posture, you will overtime become so relaxed that not even traffic will piss you off.
18. Buy your own gel manicure set and do your own nails. Not only will you save money, it will last longer and you will become such a pro! You may even become so great at it that you could open your own nail salon if you really wanted to!
19. Hold a conversation with someone when you are buying something at the register. Everyone goes through different hardships in life and you will be surprised by how amazing it will make their day if you just find out how the cashier is doing!
20. Don't be afraid to get a backbone. People suck sometimes and you deserve to have emotions about it. Just don't hold onto anything. Learn from it and remember to move on!
21. Hold your standards and keep your standards. Guys/girls will try reaaaaally hard to make you lower them. Remember you are better and stronger than that.
22. Learn how to make healthy meals. Your body will thank you, and you will have so much more energy.
23. Don't forget what got you here- be thankful that it did!
24. Trust in God in all that you do. He has some pretty big plans for your life.
25. Invest in some good boots, scarves and hats. The winter is too easy to get sick- and make sure to prevent that as much as possible! Too much living to do.. that you can't waste your time in bed!
26. Challenge yourself with work. Don't settle for the white picket fence, stay at home, housewife life- yet. You are capable of learning so much, trying super hard and the satisfaction of a job well done. You have your whole life to settle. Don't let now be one of those times.
27. Take advantage of each season. The sunshine in the summer, the leaves in the fall, the snow in the winter and the rainbows in the spring. All of these seasons have a purpose to serve in your life. Let them.
28. Smile often. It makes you instantly more beautiful, and lets what you are like on the inside show.
29. Cherish relationships with your siblings. Now is the time that you are probably the closest thus far, and it is incredibly important to be there for each other. They're pretty great, just like you.
30. Hug your parents as tight as you can every time you see them. They gave you life, obviously they deserve a great hug, at the very least! Let them know how much they mean to you. Your twenties are such an incredibly difficult, yet wonderful time. Remember that your parents and you made it through your teens. Those were probably some rough years. Now you can remember to love them again- the right way.
